KDRP Solar Initiative Supporters:
Austin, Texas– In an effort to carry on their “off the grid” rebel heritage, the Volunteers, Members and Staff of KDRP Radio are proud to announce the debut of Austin’s ONLY 100% Solar Powered Radio Station. FM100.1 in Austin features Americana and Texas Music originating from KDRP in Dripping Springs, Texas. 100.1FM in Austin is now 100% powered by the Sun. In a partnership with Freedom Solar Power in Austin, Jonah Creek Media, and through the generosity of individual supporters, KDRP completed a primary stage in their efforts to create the only 100% solar powered radio network in the country.
“Our thanks go out to the staff at Freedom Solar Power,” said KDRP Founder and Volunteer Daryl O’Neal. “Their unique expertise helped us negotiate the intricate world of Green Energy. Our goal, in part, was to install a power generation system completely off the grid with the ability to operate 24 hours a day 7 days a week while not diminishing our FM signal in the Austin area. With the help of Freedom Solar, we feel like we accomplished our goal. From customer presentations, station vehicles to studio consumption, we must reduce our carbon footprint.”
The first of these efforts began in 2010 during the building of KDRP’s first studio. Featuring eleven sun ports strategically placed in and around the 800 square foot Studio space, the KDRP loft in Dripping Springs is almost completely void of traditional wired lighting sources. “The KDRP folks are a visionary group of broadcasters and we were glad we could help them” said Brett Biggart, Director of Business Development- Freedom Solar Power in Austin.
Featuring Americana and Texas Artist, The KDRP Radio Fund began in late 2009 as a Low Power not for profit and non-commercial FM radio station serving the families of Dripping Springs. With an initial coverage of only 384 houses, the grassroots radio phenomenon that is KDRP has grown to now cover over 374,000 households and was voted Austin’s 5th most popular radio station in the 2013 Austin Chronicle Music Awards Readers Poll.
